Cassius halted on the sidewalk and stared up at the sunlight shining down on him. Sunlight in spring in San Francisco could be an iffy prospect, but it was shining brilliantly now as if to welcome him back into the world again.

Connor Huffman patted his shoulder. “Let me know if you need anything, Dr. Teran. I’ve got a meeting, so I’ll be off.” He gave me a nod. “Talk to you soon, Dr. Perry. Good luck to both of you.”

Then he was gone.

I looked over at Cassius and forced a smile. He was still heavily sedated and he looked a little confused. I reached into my purse and pulled out a pair of unisex sunglasses, offering them to him. He stared at them a moment, then took them.

I rocked on my heels. I wasn’t sure how to begin this whole thing and he didn’t seem inclined to take the lead. “So, can I drop you off anywhere?”

He slid the glasses over his eyes and stared out at the street. “I don’t know. I guess a motel. Somewhere cheap.”

I frowned at that. He was an ER doctor at a prestigious hospital. “Motel?”

The sunglasses turned toward me. “I had to give up my apartment when I got shot. I couldn’t keep up with the rent, not after the divorce. Cynthia, my wife…” He drew a deep breath and exhaled. “My ex-wife kept the house.”

My frown deepened. After he’d been shot, there had been a time when he was out of work, but he’d gone back. Otherwise the illegal autopsy couldn’t have happened. “Hold on. You were working after you got shot and before you got arrested.”

He nodded.

“Where were you living then?”

“A residence inn. Long term hotel. It took all of my savings.”

I felt a sinking in my gut. “So you’re homeless?”

He shrugged. “I can afford a cheap motel. Somewhere in the Tenderloin, maybe.”

“The Tenderloin? Are you insane?”

His brows drew down below the glasses and his jaw tightened.

“Sorry,” I said, holding up a hand. “Wrong choice of words. Really wrong.”

He sighed. “Look, I’ll just take Muni.” He turned up the street and I felt a rush of panic. I couldn’t let him get out of sight. I couldn’t just let him walk away. We were tied by this weird situation we found ourselves in and if I let him get away from me, I wasn’t sure if I would find him again.

Okay, I mean, I knew how to find him. He worked at San Francisco General and I was technically his psychiatrist, but I didn’t want him just heading off like this with no way to contact him easily.

“Cassius, wait.”

He turned back around, his hands tucked in the pockets of the scrubs he still wore.

I knew that this was a bad idea. I knew this was something I might regret. I didn’t know this man. I didn’t know what sort of a person he was, except he was an ER doctor and he’d been a devoted husband until recently.

“You can stay with me until we get this all worked out.
